The 'Plectrum House' concept is a £60K / 40m² pre-fabricated flat (excluding land cost and site works) for two persons. It is designed to be delivered to site in two simple pieces, fully fitted, finished and ready to move into once the electric, water and waste connections are made. The two pieces (main flat and balcony) will fit onto the back of a standard flat-bed trailer truck for delivery to its site destination.

Apart from the ground works, foundations and service connections, the entire flat is pre-fabricated in the factory and can be craned into position in minutes, minimising site operation times. Each aluminium framed unit has its own self-supporting structure with simple bolt-locking connections at every stacked level.

The units are conceived to maximise daylight, views and personal external space. Three flats can be erected per floor and can be stacked to a maximum of five floors high. Parking for cars and cycles is available at ground floor level and a large communal garden is built for tenants at the roof level of each block. The geometry of the design allows each floor to be mirrored in such a way that the overall appearance has a natural flowing rhythm, like a flower. This is intended to avoid the dull oppressiveness of traditional pre-fab homes stacked like 'lego' bricks.
