This major refurbishment project of a famous old auction house in Paris is designed to provide a much needed injection of image and modernisation, involving a complete reorganisation of this very fragmented and dated building. The phased design includes an impressive atrium space that acts as the focal core to the building, accommodating a dramatic circular cascade of escalators with grand balconies. This vertical circulation tower provides an ingenious solution to the problematic existing scenario. In addition to providing easy access to the auction rooms, library and rest rooms, the circulation spaces are specifically designed to encourage chance encounters, communication and dialogue. They are also pleasant destinations in which to meet and spend time. The majority of the designed elements are pre-fabricated for speed of construction and installation.
